…led by local musician and composer James Moriarty. Sessions are Monday afternoons 4.30-5.30pm at St Matthias Hall in Wordsworth Road, N16 8DD.
Alongside these regular rehearsals, the choir perform throughout the local community, including regular opportunities to sing with a full orchestra at big public events alongside Chorus of Dissent. Cost is £10 per term.
Latest project April 2019
Young Dissenters also took our work out into the community through delivering sessions in local schools. In spring 2019, a large-scale singing and songwriting project involving children from three local primary schools – Grasmere, Betty Layward and William Patten – led to a performance at St Matthias Church involving over one hundred children.
Young Dissenters are committed to continuing this work in order to support wider participation amongst local youth.
We are very fortunate to be supported by local charity Dissenters Arts N16, who provide funding for the choir. They support the choir’s regular rehearsals, projects, and performances. Thanks to their generosity we are able to offer places in the choir for only £10 per half term.
Everyone is welcome to join. Sessions start again in September 2019, leading to possibly two performances next term with adult choir Chorus of Dissent (including their famous Christmas concert). Come and pay us a visit or contact James at jambo@jamesmoriarty.net
History
The Young Dissenters pilot project was generously sponsored for 18 months by local independent financial advisers Ruth Whitehead Associates and now the charity which was set up in 2017 to create artistic and cultural opportunities for our community DissentersArtsN16 has raised enough money for young voices to raise the roof again.
Young Dissenters gave young people from a variety of backgrounds a fantastic experience of singing with a composer, performing some concerts with our adult community choir Chorus of Dissent (including selling out Stokey Town Hall) – and reached the dizzying heights of recording the CD A Hum About Mine Ears with internationally acclaimed vocalist and composer Clara Sanabras.
We’re looking forward to hearing a lot more from them!

I was completely bowled over by the Young Dissenters and the whole performance on Saturday.
