St Matthias Church, 5.30pm Saturday 13 April 2019
Delighted to present our own semi-staged version of this iconic piece, performed in English. We have adapted Bach’s dramatic setting of the Easter Passion play for the 21st century.
The passion features the first-ever female evangelist, broadcaster and vocalist Jumoke Fashola who currently presents J to Z on BBC Radio 3 and Sunday Breakfast for BBC Radio London.
The actress and singer has appeared at the Royal Albert Hall alongside Dionne Warwick, performed with Bobby McFerrin at the Meltdown Festival, Royal Festival Hall, sung Handel at the London Arena, performed alongside the Royal Ballet and was a featured singer at Tate Modern.
She performed Song for a Phoenix for the Coventry Olympic Torch Relay and was a volunteer dancer at the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony. Her debut album The Condition of Being A Woman was released in 2014, and she created and hosts Jazz Verse Jukebox at Hoxton Hall.
Jumoke is performing with Antonio Joseph as Jesus. He started singing as the Junior Cantor at St Matthias Church purely by accident. One Saturday while cleaning the church, he and a few members of the congregation were light-heartedly chanting the psalms when they were overheard by Father David. He insisted Antonio must sing that Sunday, and that was that.
Since then he has sung with the Antigua and Barbuda National Association Choir, and received the David Fussey Choral Exhibition award 2009-2012 performing with the University of Greenwich Choir. Antonio was delighted to sing with the Diamond Jubilate Choir as part of the River Thames Pageant for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
